Above is the school crest for Tisdale High School and as you can see it has the latin phrase “Ad Astra Per Ardua” as the motto. The phrase was quoted in a called “The People of the Mist” by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, it is uncertain how he came to use this phrase which comes from the poet Virgil. The phrase is taken to mean, “Through adversity to the stars” and was adopted by the Royal Air Force as their motto in 1912. Thereafter the motto was adopted by other Commonwealth air forces included our own RCAF.
