Barrierville School District #3015 (Pre Ste. Marie)
1924 Class - with Teacher Mary Cecile Pedweybeki
This little school served not only as an educational centre, but was also used for church services and as a community hall for dances, box socials, card parties, weddings, political meetings, etc. It was the social centre of this predominantly French speaking community.
About 1939, the school was moved from the SW corner of 27-42-12 to a new and more central location of NW corner of SW-21-42-12 W2. New school districts were being formed by families who had moved north to escape the drought and depression of the 1930s.
In 1945 the Barrierville school became part of the Hudson Bay School Unit No. 52 and in 1950, at the request of the ratepayers, the Hudson Bay School Unit built a new, larger and more modern school. In 1960 or 1961 Barrierville requested transfer and was accepted into the Tisdale School Unit.
In September 1961, the Barrierville students were bussed to Bjorkdale. The last teacher was Carol Handford.
