Motion School District #5132
.
Approximately forty-four families moved into the area when it was opened up for settlement in 1936- 37. There were few roads in the region and even these were in poor condition so travel was on foot or by horseback. The school district was organized in April of 1937. A one-room school with a cloakroom was built in 1938 on the NE22-45-11-W2. There was also a large barn in the school yard. The school was named for the Motion family who owned the quarter of land beside the school. It opened in 1939 with an enrolment of 53 pupils. Mrs. Hildred Lutz was the first teacher.
The first school wasn’t large enough to accommodate all of the school age children in the district so in 1939-40 a new school was built and the enrollment went up to 70 - yes 70 students in one classroom! The first school then was converted to a teacherage.
On April 24, 1961 Motion School was destroyed by a fire. Mr. Frederick Lawton and the students completed the school year in the old High School Building in Mistatim. In the fall of 1961 the students attended school in Mistatim.
