Frederick’s Siding School At Orley
.
The school building was a log house owned by Mr. & Mrs. Gus Worth. In about 1930, the Worth’s moved into a another house so that their first home could be used as a school. For the first year the younger children were taught by Mrs. Frederick. The next year, 1931, when a grant became available, a qualified teacher, Mr. Glen Hannah, was hired. A two room teacherage was added to the school for him.
Many community activities were centred around the school. They included sliding on the hill, church meetings, evening readings, ball games on the sawdust pile from the mill site, and Christmas Concerts.
During the winter months, when extra mill workers arrived in the area, the school enrollment would swell to about 35 students. When the mill closed, enrollment declined so the school was closed in 1944. The remaining students then attended Mistatim or Motion schools. Mrs. Christina Bowerman was the last teacher.
