Crooked River School District # 2219

The first school in Crooked River was erected in 1905, and included sections 31, 32, 33, in township 44, range. 12, sec. 13. This first school was an old Saskatchewan Lumber Company cook shack. On June 3, 1922 a new site was approved by the R. M. 426, this was on the N.E. corner of NW 6-45- 12. On Jan. 10, 1923 debentures for $1500 were issued. The first one-roomed school was built in 1924 or 1925. By the year 1929 the population had increased and another school was needed. A new site in the hamlet of Crooked River was approved by the R. M. on March 16, 1929. Another school was then opened on a different site. In 1937 an additional class room was added to that school, there were now three classrooms and three teachers.

n 1947 these classrooms were replaced by a new two- roomed school (right) which remained in use until 1964. This building then became Hesje’s Welding Shop. A fourth classroom was located in the United Church building. At this time the total enrollment reached an all time high of 143 students.

Mr. Alex Fairbairn served as principal of Crooked River school for the period of 1940 to 1960 with the exception of three years service in the R.C.A.F. and the year 1959 at the University of Saskatchewan. At one time Crooked River school taught all grades from one to twelve. Enrollment declined to 80 students, but thenin the nineteen sixties, students from Alder Ridge, Girwood, and Peesane were added to Crooked River School. Enrollment then went to 103 in grades one to nine. High school students were bussed to Tisdale.

In November, 1964, a new one story, four room school was officially opened. The new building included an assembly room in the centre measuring 23 by 34 feet. A well on the chool site provided water for modern plumbing until the hamlet constructed a water system for the entire community. The total cost of the building was $75,000. The Provincial building grant was $15,600 and contribution by the Federal Government by way of Municipal Development and Loan Fund was $10,000. Mr. Bill Peoples cut the ribbon for the official opening of this school November 13, 1964.

At the end of the 1989 school term Crooked River School was closed and students bussed to Tisdale, Arborfield or Bjorkdale. The Crooked River School was then converted to a workshop for the Tisdale School division.
