From the turn of the century until the late 1950s, one room schools dotted the countryside throughout Western Canada. Goyer School, which derived its name from Donosa Goyer, one of the first area settlers, was one of those landmarks.

The first school meeting of the proposed Goyer School District was held at the residence of Donosa Goyer on November 6, 1913. Theodore Lalonde was appointed president, with Raymond Courteau elected as secretary. The trustees elected were: Theodore Lalonde, Donosa Goyer, and Raymond Courteau. Some of the names submitted for the proposed school were: Goyer, Bachand, Bedford, Fairhaven, and Norfold - Goyer was the name chosen.

Goyer School District was established on April 19, 1914. The school was built by local settlers, 11⁄2 miles south and one mile west of Zenon Park, located on the NE11-47-13-W2. The first teacher was

Adrian Carriere. In 1929, Napoleon Poulin obtained the contract to move the building two miles further west where it would be more centrally located, on the NW10-47-13-W2. It was in August 1950 that Bernard Wassill wired the school and teacherage for electrical power.

For over forty years the school provided education for Grades 1 to 8. Some years as many as forty students crammed into the tiny building. In the spring and fall most of the students walked to school and during the winter a few families drove cabooses. Teachers were scarce for many of those years. Often the school district was able to obtain a teacher with Normal School training, however, some years a grade 11 or 12 student was called upon to fill in. In spite of these handicaps, students succeeded. Goyer school graduates became successful in teaching, nursing, farming and other varied occupations.

Like many of the country schools, Goyer, was a community centre: a place for local meetings, school picnics, and the unforgettable Christmas concerts. The barn was multi-purpose; sheltering the horses, a hideout for young puffers, and a source of pucks for pickup hockey games.

The school closed in 1959 and school district lands were transferred to Zenon Park School District No. 834. The school buildings have been removed but fond memories will always remain for those who attended or taught in Goyer School.
